About the Author
Stephen Bates is a Senior Fellow at the Annenberg Washington Program. He has written two books about journalism, If No News, Send Rumors (1989) and The Media and the Congress (editor) (1987), as well as The Spot: The Rise of Political Advertising on Television (with Edwin Diamond) (1984; revised eds., 1988, 1992) and Battleground: One Mother's Crusade, the Religious Right, and the Struggle for Our Schools (1993). His articles about the press have appeared in Forbes MediaCritic, American Heritage, Freedom at Issue, Ethics, Christian Science Monitor, and elsewhere. A former fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, he holds an A.B. and a J.D. from Harvard University.
